Seattle Law For Minors Being Tried As Adults

If you can keep your head when all about you
are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And, which is more, you’ll be a Man, my son!

Rudyard Kipling

In recent years there have been a number of teenagers facing very serious charges in adult court – charges that, if heard in juvenile court, would consider the age and potential for rehabilitation concomitant with natural maturation. Since these charges were violent in nature, though, these teens were tried as adults.

Age Of “Adulthood”

According to Washington state law, as early as the age of 16 a minor who has allegedly committed a crime that is violent in nature can be headed to adult court. Here’s what is at stake if that happens:

Juvenile vs. Adult Gun Possession

When a younger teen (younger than 16-17) is caught with a gun in Seattle, he or she may face much less serious charges as a minor – basic juvenile detention, for example. When those same teens are caught and tried as adults, they find themselves facing much more serious consequences, which could include years of legitimate jail time (as adults).
